Abstract

This study aims to assess the improvement in student learning of Newtonian concepts using Algodoo. The Force Concept Inventory (FCI) is administered to first-year students majoring in mathematics, physics, biology, and chemistry taking introductory physics courses. The FCI is given three times: first as a pre-test to assess initial understanding, then during peer discussions where students are asked to visualize the physical situations of the questions using Algodoo whenever possible, and finally after two weeks of peer discussions. All discussions are recorded and transcribed to examine how students use Algodoo to aid their comprehension of Newtonian mechanics. The final results indicate that Algodoo helps students learn independently within their peer groups and enhances their conceptual understanding of Newtonian concepts. However, the post-test results show that the FCI remains extremely challenging, particularly for questions that are difficult to visualize using Algodoo. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing.
