A substation is a crucial part in electrical power system. Much electrical equipment is spread out around the substation, which is connected to substation grid grounding. The grid grounding provides a path to the ground in the event of a short circuit for protection of the equipment as well as safety of worker. Therefore, the substation grounding systems kept as low possible. This paper is to estimate safety threshold parameters of substation grid configuration types, namely, rectangular shape, square shape, L-shape, and T-shape. The safety parameters are estimated using formulas adopted from IEEE Std. 80-2013. Two software programs were used, i.e., MATLAB and ETAP programs, for estimating and analyzing the grid substation on Sarula Substation. The estimation results from the two-software used show almost the same. The grid configuration affects the length of the conductor used and the safety threshold. The T-shape uses the minimum conductor length among the configurations. © 2025 IEEE.
