Abstract

Innovative applications of biological systems in built environments are becoming increasingly important to address environmental challenges and support sustainable national development. One major concern is the rising concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, which contributes to global warming and impacts environmental quality. Green wall systems offer a promising approach to optimize urban spaces while contributing to carbon reduction and air purification efforts. This study investigates the effect of an indoor green wall installation on CO2 concentration and its potential contribution for improving indoor environments and supporting climate resilience initiatives. Four green wall modules planted with Cuphea hyssopifolia using rice husk media were developed and installed in a closed room. CO2 levels were measured with comparative measurements taken both with and without the green wall system. Temperature and humidity were also monitored. The results indicated a decrease in CO2 concentration by 12 ppm, from 721 ppm to 709 ppm, along with minor improvements in the indoor microclimate, including a temperature drop of 0.79°C and a humidity increase of 0.35%. These findings highlight the potential of green wall systems as a practical, nature-based innovation to enhance indoor environmental quality, contributing to broader goals of environmental sustainability and national resilience. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
