Artifacts are considered physical representations of the existence and characteristics of a particular culture. Artifact culture in Indonesia is very rich and diverse, reflecting ethnic diversity, history and traditions. One example is the batak ulos, a batik cloth with aesthetic value that is neatly arranged and passed down from generation to generation. The unique and aesthetically valuable ulos has not been explored in written batik art. This study examines the ulos motif creation process and its application to batik techniques to determine its aesthetic value It is hoped that through the batak ulos, cultural heritage can be preserved and a bridge can be created between tradition and modernity. The research methodology applied is work creation. The resulting work is a functional piece of art closely related to everyday human needs. The research process includes engineering, exploring, and realizing designs. These designs are then visualized in batik techniques and applied to disposable objects, such as gardikan for women and long-sleeved shirts for men. The study concludes that combining ulos motifs with Toba batak and Karo ornaments yields new batik designs with unique characteristics. The research successfully integrated elements of north Sumatra’s traditional culture into batik art, helping preserve cultural heritage in a new form. Copyright © 2024 Wahyu Tri Atmojo.
