The coastal waters of North Aceh, Aceh Province, are home to several high-value fishery commodities, including the black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon). To date, no formal stock assessment has been conducted for this species in the region, despite its intensive exploitation by local fishers. This study aimed to identify and describe the catch composition of P. monodon in North Aceh waters. Fieldwork was carried out from June to July 2025 at two sampling stations: PPI Krueng Mane and TPI Blang Mee. Shrimp samples were collected using purposive sampling, and morphometric identification was performed based on 23 morphological characters. Gillnets were employed as the primary fishing gear to obtain shrimp specimens. The results indicated that kelong shrimp (Metapenaeus spp.) dominated the catch composition (70%), followed by black tiger shrimp (P. monodon) (30%). These findings provide baseline information on shrimp resources in North Aceh, which can serve as an essential reference for future stock assessments and sustainable management strategies of shrimp fisheries in the region. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
