Abstract

The main objective of this study was to improve properties of asphalt binder mixtures. Modification of asphalt binder by addition small amount of postconsumer polyethylene PE and PE-grafted-MA (PE-g-MA) as compatibilizer. The Composition of waste plastic and PE-g-MA was mixed in preheated asphalt binder in an external mixer in 180oC for 60 minutes. The modified asphalt with postconsumer plastic PE then characterized in term of conventional properties and rheology characterization. Tests of three kind composition of asphalt mixtures containing different PE content and a control mixture without plastic PE were conducted. Based on results of rutting resistance tests at high temperature measurement 58-82oC, the addition of postconsumer PE in asphalt mixtures could improve engineering properties of asphalt mixtures, and the plastic content has a significant effect on the performance of resistance to permanent deformation at high temperature after short term aging. However, the addition of the postconsumer PE and PE-g-MA have not increased its fatigue cracking resistance at low measurement temperature after long term aging. © 2022 American Institute of Physics Inc..
